winter n. . . winter 'dieters' or 'winter men,' as they were referred to. A 'dieter' was a man who fished in the summer, and in the absence of employment in the winter, joined a household on an informal basis. In many cases, if a dieter had been a shareman, he might remain with his crew skipper for the duration of the winter.
