two numThis boat is called the _tow stemmed boat_ because the stem is very much like the stern, in both shape and construction. It was generally smaller than the more square stem type which followed this. However, this had nothing to do with the actual construction - this type could have been built as large as any that followed. It was used for different fisheries, herring, cod salmon ans lobster in the Bay of Islands area. It was most popular in the period 1900-1925. However, a few of this type were used as late as 1940s and although there is none of them in use in Gillams at the present time, there may be one or two such boats in Bay of Islands today.
