The Newfoundland is a strain of mastiff, a variety of the domestic dog _Canis familiaris_ L. According to Harold MacPherson(1937:133-40) it is a descendant of the white or cream-coloured Pyrenean sheep dog taken to Newfoundland by Basque fishermen and crossed with mastiffs and other sporting dogs taken there by the English, and with other large dogs (over) imported by the French, Spanish and Portuguese.PRINTED ITEM DNE-citG.
