outfits (hook + line)

outfit nThe fishing lines used were..about 25 to 50 fathoms long made of White cotton or steam tarred twine with one or two fishhooks on which was secured a Caplin, Lance or a piece of herring about 2 feet from the hooks was a round piece of lead about half a pound in weight to sink the hooks and bait under the water until they found a bite, bringing the fish to the surface they would measure the length of line in fathoms (the width of the fishermans arms stretched out across his chest approx 6 ft.) Then fasten that much line to a tolepin, then rebait the hooks and throw them from the side of the boat the hooks and lead would sink the measured depth to where they caught the last fish, and sit (over) & await another jerk on the line and then haul it back again.
