spurt nThis word means a "break" or "to relieve" someone. It is a very old word used mainly by my grandmother's generation and only sometimes by my mothers generation. Never used by my peer group or my generation. If someone has been working long and hard my grandmother would say "I'l go [reverse] and give him a "spurt". I heard it used in reference to relieving people at making fish years ago. My grandmother had a family of boys and when they had been making the fish on the flake for awhile, she would go down with my mother, and give the men a "spurt".
