flat nThis boat known on Gillams as a "_flat_" was so called because the bottom was almost perfectly flat. The rounded-type bottom which is above was only common during the last year or so that the "flat" was popular. It was used mostly within the cove itself - for going to the collar (boat mooring) etc. This type of boat was popular up until about ten years ago - late 1950's- when, like the dory it gave way to the outboard motor boat. This is really the model from which the first outboard motor boats was built.
