cross-handed avIn the nineteenth century in both Avalon study areas fishing crews were predominantly dyadic (two males per boat) although in the settlements north of St. John's some men fished single-handed ("cross-handed") or as triads. From at least the middle of the nineteenth century trap skiffs requiring crews of 5 to 9 men were operated in both study areas and such crews were normally recruited agnatically, especially on the Cape Shore, although affinal relatives and even non-kin were sometimes hired as sharemen or labourers.PRINTED ITEM DNE-cit G.
