The Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) rural electrification project demonstrates how photovoltaic systems can hasten sustainable development in remote rural communities. With the support of the Solar Electric Light Fund, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and Sandia National Laboratories, The VWU installed photovoltaic lighting systems in 130 domestic dwellings and five community centres, as well as photovoltaic-powered street lights in two Vietnamese village markets. These energy systems have helped to stimulate business and educational opportunities in the Mekong River Delta and in Northern Vietnam
