Following the energy crisis of the early 1970s there was steady pressure to formalize energy conservation efforts in the United States. To ensure that all important considerations concerning gas fired appliances were included in the U.S. Department of Energy's analysis for technological feasibility and economic justification, GRI established a NAECA-related program element for furnaces, boilers, and direct heating equipment in its overall program to provide well documented reseach findings regarding codes and standards issues facing gas fired appliances. It was expected that the results of this work would be used as input to DOE's analysis by DOE's contractors.
