Proteins are the media through which genetic information is expressed. They are involved in most if not all biological processes, from receptor activation to cellular process regulation or even chemical reaction catalysis. This diversity of activities is made possible because proteins come in all sizes and shapes (their structures). In most cases, each protein has one unique structure (the native structure) which is directly related to its function. Knowing the structure of a proteins is therefore of great importance for the understanding of its function or of the mechanism by which the function is carried out.
