Bulk donor–acceptor heterojunctions between conjugated polymers and fullerene derivatives have been utilized successfully for photovoltaic devices showing monochromatic energy conversion efficiencies above 1%. The photovoltaic response of these devices is based on the ultrafast, photoinduced electron transfer from the conjugated polymer to the fullerene [N.S. Sariciftci and A.J. Heeger, Handbook of Organic Conductive Molecules and Polymers, (Wiley, New York, 1997), pp. 413–455].
