This study assessed the morphological knowledge of kindergarten and first grade children in relation to their early spelling ability. Morphological knowledge was investigated as a possible source of variation in the development of spelling ability for two reasons. First, in spelling, children need to understand the internal structure of words, and specifically, that words are composed of morphemes and that morphemes are composed of phonemes. Second, it has been demonstrated that children with learning problems have more difficulty spelling inflected and derived forms of words than other children.
