Educating a nation of ethnically, racially and linguistically diverse children is one of the many challenges facing teachers and teacher educators. In 1995, 35 percent of the students enrolled in public schools were multicultural 1 students of color (National Center for Education Statistics, 2002) and this number is expected to grow to 46 percent by 2020 (Pallas, Natriello, & McDill, 1989). In some of the nation\u27s largest cities, the population of multicultural students has already exceeded the percentage of White students (Banks, 1994).
