Deficiency in this vitamin may lead to demethylation of heterochromatin causing structural centromere defects that could induce abnormal distribution of replicated chromosomes during nuclear division. Because aneuploidy of chromosomes 17 and 21 is often observed in breast cancer and leukaemia and increased risk for these cancers is associated with folate deficiency, we hypothesized that folate deficiency may lead to aneuploidy of chromosomes 17 and 21.
