Jewish wedding ceremony in Libya and its previous customs

The present thesis deals with a Jewish wedding and its form in Libya at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. The first part is dedicated to the basic pattern of a Jewish wedding and its most significant changes throughout history. This part also interprets a Jewish wedding from anthropological point of view, as a rite of passage. Thus, it understands the jewish wedding as a symbolical passage of a married couple from one stage of life to another. The second part of this thesis focuses on a Jewish wedding in Libya. Here the special attention is focused on the Jewish community in Tripoli, which was, before the World War II., one of the most numerous and the best documented Jewish communities in Libya. In order to present differences between rural area and Tripoli, Jewish wedding in Djebel Nefusa is also described. Finally, the thesis also discusses possible adoption of the customs of surrounding Muslim communities
