The study was conducted in 1996-1997 in Sempur and Timbenuh, two dusun in East Lombok, where the forest is their main source of livelihood. Both dusun experienced rapid social change caused by competition for access to forest resources, government monoculture policy (cinnamon) and the declaration of the forest as a protected area.
