BackgroundEfficient peritoneal dialysis depends on an intact layer of mesothelial cells that line the peritoneal membrane. This layer is disrupted in patents on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis during episodes of peritonitis (acute injury) and replaced by fibrous tissue during extended dialysis (chronic injury).
