: The perception of communication of social media Users (Blackberry Messenger, Twitter, and Facebook) at Students of SMAN 1 Tahuna. Preface: Social media is rated as a result of technology that is disappearance by many people. Pros and cons come up from conventional and modern class of people. Conventional class of people evaluate that social media does not make human beings grow communicatively with other human beings. Medium theory believes that when technology is integrated with a ‘lifestyle', perhaps human beings will be difficult to live (David Holmes. 2012 : 383). Generally, modern human beings try to adjust with their environment that demands them to expand with technology. Marshall McLuhan said in his Determinism theory about technology, “We make equipments to communicate, and finally those equipments that we used form or affect our life.” Based on the facts and the statements by the experts, the researcher saw that this is the real problem in the development of communication technology these days, especially the communication that is done in social media (Blackberry Messenger, Twitter, and Facebook). Therefore, the researcher decided to dig the perception of social media users toward the intensity of social media using, the way to communicate in social media, the messages that are delivered, and the effectiveness of communication in social media. The students of SMAN 1 Tahuna, the district of Sangihe Islands are the subjects of this research. This district was only reached out by two mobile phone providers. Method: Qualitative method was used in this research. Results: The students of SMAN 1 Tahuna were so intense in using social media because they wanted to follow the trend, be up-to-date, and because of the demand of fellowship. The messages that were delivered were exaggerated. So much time were wasted because of communicating in social media. They also used social media to release their emotions by teasing others and they felt relieved by doing that although in the end, they regretted it. On the other side, they felt satisfied when using social media. From the effectiveness of communication, social media was effective for them because they can tease others but on the other side, social media was not effective for them because many people can know the messages that were delivered. Recommendation: The students of SMA N.1. Tahuna should use social media according to their needs. They should not publish things that are connected with their emotions such as anger and sadness in social media; it is better to be delivered directly
