KEMAMPUAN PENALARAN DAN PEMECAHAN MASALAH MAHASISWA SEMESTER AWAL PRODI PENDIDIKAN MATEMATIKA UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

This research is done to know about reasoning capability and\ud solving problem in mathematics of the first semester student of mathematics department of muhammadiyah university of malang.\ud This research uses descriptive qualitative research. It is used to analyze data from the result of reasoning capability and solving problem test.\ud From that data known that 62,67% students are good in\ud understanding the problem, 62,33% students are good in designing pattern from each items well, 60,25% students are good in solving problem based on the pattern and stages which they designed before, and 54% students are good in recorrect the pattern that they design.\ud Can be concluded that students are good in understanding the\ud reasoning and solving problem, in which students are able to solve the items based on the steps or stage solutions that they have made. But on the other hand, can’t be ignored that there were some students only emphasize on the result of a problem without paying attention to the process or solving steps
