The essay illustrates the cultural strategies through which Giorgio de Chirico managed to negotiate his original classicism within the primitivist-oriented Parisian avant-garde circle of Picasso and Apollinaire between 1911 and 1915, arguing that this negotiation was assisted by a broader reframing of classicism in Western Europe at the turn of the twentieth centur
