This paper deals with the European standard EN 1998 (EC8), which is about the design of earthquake resistant structures. We limited ourselves to concrete structures, with emphasis on different types of concrete walls. An idealised building was used to demonstrate the design of walls according to EC8. Three different types of walls have been discussed: rectangular cross-section walls, coupled walls and 'T' walls. According to EC8 it is possible to choose between two types of reinforced concrete design: ductility class high and ductility class medium.
