This paper presents theoretical aspects that evince the importance and need of a contrastive analysis of the formal forms of address in American English and Cuban Spanish. The literature shows that, in spite of the value such analysis would have to the development of speakers of English as a Foreign Language’ s intercultural competence, many aspects of the pragmatics of forms of address in these two language variants still need further research. The present study is mainly based on a literature review.</p
