Part I We examine a nonlinear diffusion equation that arises in the study of a number of physical problems, where the equation is nonlinear because the diffusion coefficient is proportional to a power of the concentration. Previous authors have proven using similarity solutions, that this dependence produces fronts (interfaces between regions of zero and nonzero concentration) which propagate with finite speed, as well as waiting-time behavior, where the fronts remain stationary for a finite amount of time before beginning to move.
