A direct measurement of flat plate laminar local skin friction was undertaken at M = 5.8 in the GALCIT Hypersonic Wind Tunnel, Leg No. 1. A new balance particularly suited to the requirements of hypersonic experimentation was designed. By means of the fluorescent lacquer technique for indicating boundary layer transition, unexpectedly high natural transition Reynolds numbers were observed. The several methods of forcing transition which were used were unsuccessful in producing transition at a Reynolds number of two million.
