PENGARUH STRUKTUR PASAR TERHADAP KINERJA INDUSTRI PERBANKAN INDONESIA

ABSTRACT There are three hypothesis with regard to market structure and performance or structure-conduct-performance paradigm. The first hypothesis is traditional hypothesis which emphasized on market collusion. The second hypothesis is differentiation hypothesis which emphasized on product differentiation, and the third is efficiency hypothesis which emphasized on market efficiency. The objective of this research is to examine how strong the influence of market structure in banking performance. This research also tries to prove whether market share and concentration in banking industry as proxy to efficiency. If it is proven, so there is no relationship between market share and concentration with profitability. It is appropriate with efficient structure hypothesis. If there is positive correlation between market share and profitability, it is appropriate with differentiation hypothesis. But, if there is positive correlation between concentration and profitability, it means that banking performance has been influenced by concentration as proxy to market structure with collusion indeed. It is appropriate with traditional hypothesis. The result of the panel data analysis conducted on a sample of 16 biggest commercial banks over the period from 2004 to 2008 have allowed us to strongly reject the efficiency hypothesis and differentiation hypothesis. The empirical findings suggest that market concentration determines profitability in the Indonesian banking industry, it means that Indonesian banking industry strongly support traditional hypothesis. Keywords: market structure, traditional hypothesis, differentiation hypothesis, efficiency hypothesis, profitability, performance, banking idustry ABSTRAKSI Terdapat tiga pemikiran dalam menganalisis hubungan antara struktur pasar dan kinerja dengan menggunakan paradigma Structure Conduct Performance (SCP). Pertama, hipotesis tradisional yang mendasarkan pada perilaku kolusi, kedua, hipotesis diferensiasi yang mendasarkan pada perilaku diferensiasi produk dan yang ketiga, hipotesis efisiensi yang mendasarkan pada perilaku efisiensi pasar. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis seberapa kuat pengaruh dari struktur pasar pada kinerja industri perbankan. Penelitian ini mencoba membuktikan bahwa pangsa pasar dan konsentrasi pada industri perbankan adalah proksi dari efisiensi. Jika hal tersebut terbukti, maka tidak akan ada hubungan yang signifikan antara pangsa pasar dan konsentrasi dengan profitabilitas sehingga mendukung hipotesis efisiensi. Jika terdapat hubungan yang positif antara pangsa pasar dengan profitabilitas, maka hasilnya mendukung hipotesis diferensiasi. Namun jika terdapat hubungan yang positif antara konsentrasi dengan profitabilitas, berarti kinerja industri perbankan tersebut dipengaruhi oleh konsentrasi sebagai proksi dari struktur pasar yang mana didalamnya ditengarai terdapat perilaku kolusi. Hal tersebut sesuai dengan hipotesis tradisional. Hasil dari analisis panel data yang dilakukan dengan sampel 16 bank umum terbesar selama periode 2004 hingga 2008 menunjukkan bahwa dengan kuat menolak hipotesis efisiensi dan hipotesis diferensiasi. Studi empiris memberikan temuan bahwa konsentrasi pasar mempengaruhi profitabilitas pada industri perbankan Indonesia, yang artinya bahwa industri perbankan Indonesia dengan kuat mendukung hipotesis tradisional.
