Analysis of the Factors Related to Midwifes Work Performance in Handling Neonatal Asphyxia Cases in District of Demak

One of the public health indicators is Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). Based on estimation in Indonesia, 4.608.000 babies are born every year and 100.454 babies are dead during neonatal period. In Central Java Province, IMR was 14.23 per 1.000 life births. IMR due to asphyxia in District of Demak increased from year 2006 to 2007. In year 2006, asphyxia cases were equal to 10.6% and the cases increased in year 2007 namely 14.2%. Main causes of infant mortality are complication during pregnancy and child-birth namely asphyxia, sepsis, and birth with low-weight. Neonatal Asphyxia is a situation in which babies cannot take a breath spontaneously and regularly after their birth. This condition is accounted for hypoxia in mothers womb. Aim of this research was to find out the factors which are related to midwifes work performance in handling neonatal asphyxia cases in District of Demak. This was observational research using analytic method and cross-sectional approach. Sample was carried out by Proportional Stratified Random Sampling. The result of this research shows that most of the respondents are between 24-33 years of age (62.2%). Beside that, they have a length of work period between 10-20 years (63.3%), Diploma I degree (73.5%), and ever followed training for handling asphyxia cases (66.3%). Based on bivariate analysis, variables that have significant relationship with midwifes work performance are knowledge (p=0.0001), motivation (p=0.0001), work burden (p=0.0001), facility (p=0.0001), and perception towards supervision (p=0.004).
