Some Factors Related to Intra Uterine Device (IUD) Used on No-IUD Acceptors at Pedurungan Sub District in Semarang City

Decreasing number of Intra Uterine Device (IUD) users is one of the problems in the implementation of family planning program strategy, based on Medium-Term Development Plan (2004-2009), which focus on the increasing Long-Term Contraception Methods used. The number of IUD iser in Semarang City decreased, especially at Pedurungan Sub District. The objective of this research was to investigate the factors (knowledge, perceptions on cost, safety, values, information, and quality of services) related to the use of IUD. This study was an observational research with survey method and cross-sectional approach. Data were collected by interviews using structured questionnaires on 118 respondents at Kalicari and Pedurungan Tengah village. Further, in-depth interviews were conducted on 17 informants, who consisted of two couples of Non-IUD acceptors, two couples of IUD acceptors, two couples of ex-IUD acceptors, two senior midwives, one junior midwife, one midwife, and one physician at a public healthcare center. Quantitative data were analyzed qualitatively by content analysisi methods. Most of the respondents were young adults (76.4%), housewives (68.6%), had low education (64.4%), lower income than Regional Minimum Wages (53.4%). Most respondents had low knowledge (56.8%), perceived an expensive cost for IUD services (53.4%), felt unsafe (50.8%), felt ashamed in IUD installment (38.1%), perceived insufficient information about IUD (59.3%), and perceived a good quality of family planning services (55.9%).
