A systematic approach for analysis of worn surfaces is presented as an analytical tool to deliver information about the current state of the surface. With this approach not only the quantity but also quality of the modified surface is revealed, information of great importance in case of surface treatments. The change of bearing ratio is observed with progressive wear and changes of morphological parameters are related to wear rate. The mechanism of wear particle transfer at the interface is analysed. Prospects for applying this new morphological approach are discussed
