Computing, or informatics as we call it in Europe, covers many areas. In this paper we will discuss an important difference between two of these areas: software engineering and information systems. Epistemology, the study of the question: "What grounds can we justifiably have for believing the truth of assertions about reality?", is complex in informatics.
