Keynote speaker Erana Cooper asks whether psychologists’ hearts have caught up with our minds in engaging with Maori.This paper addresses how Pakeha/tauiwi psychologists may learn to ‘stand together’ with Maori in ways that use both our heads and hearts. Recent research into processes of change for Pakeha showed the significance of emotional responses to stories of Maori pain and dispossession, disturbing statistics, and being culturally de-centred, in conjunction with increased understanding and professional competence.
