Television production is a multi-disciplinary collaboration that has long and frequently complex processes. By using a self-reflexive model, we wanted to learn more about how best to teach by doing, without losing student engagement. Students need to learn to engage with an overview, collaborate with other disciplines and organisations, understand how their role works as part of a team environment, and employ a range of technical skills. How can this be achieved in such a way that students feel that they maintain a sense of ownership, particularly when popular culture exemplifies an auteur or lone practitioner?
