The literary reception of Brecht’s theatre in Greece took place in several stages in correlation with the often difficult political situation of the country. Brecht’s theatre stood and still stands today in an area of tension between art and politics. Especially the conservative theatre people leaning towards tradition criticize his stance and the political implications of his plays while at the same time they try to redeem the latter as works of art. This ambivalent relationship is reflected in stage productions, in which the Aristotelian tradition is played off against the Brechtian intention to set in motion a train of independent thought on the part of the audience
