School exclusion has profound implications for life chances. Mentoring, alternative provision and anger management groups based on cognitive behavioural therapy are commonly used to improve behaviour and reduce exclusions. This qualitative case study explores, retrospectively, what factors can contribute to placing young people at risk of exclusion and what support interventions help to reduce exclusions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Year 11 boys (n=9) who were at risk of permanent exclusion one year before commencement of the study.
