The research undertaken has collated a broad range of technologies and provided a guide to assist the development of a new improved 66/11 kV skid mounted substation. This dissertation investigated the impact of modern secondary systems in substations to utilities and, takes a look at different approaches used by electricity services providers, for migrating from today’s system to the future ones, typically using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) communication systems incorporated with IEC 61850 protocols. This report covered most of the technical constraints associated with IEC 61850 standards and also explained the impact it might have on 66/11 kV skid mounted substation design, construction and operation.
