Summary Cell division is one of the most fundamental processes in biology. Meiosis is a specialized form of cell division resulting in cells capable of sexual reproduction. In higher animals male reproductive cells are called sperm cells, the female ones are called oocytes. The life cycle of a typical sexually reproducing organism includes a point where sperm and oocyte fuse to yield a diploid zygote, which develops into a new individual. This process is termed fertilization. The oocytes of most vertebrates are arrested at metaphase of meiosis II before fertilization.
