Physical activity with and without external loads is important for maintaining bone mass. Reduced activity is one of the main reasons for the gradual loss of bone mass in old age. In cases of severe trauma and strict immobilization one can develop a form of rapid and progressive (disuse) osteoporosis, which is the result of a sudden imbalance between bone resorption and new bone formation. Bone loss can be up to 1 % per week [15] and can last up to six months before it is being gradually reduced. As a sign of increased bone resorption, high concentration of calcium in the blood and increased calcium excretion in urine is prominent.
