Data from NORPAC 55 in the northeastern Pacific Ocean showed that there is a subsurface oceanic frontal zone beneath the region of the subtropical convergence. Correlations of temperature with salinity and of temperature with oxygen demonstrated that the front separates two distinct water masses at depths where thermo-steric anomalies vary between 125 and 70 cut. The front is a well-defined feature oriented approximately east-west at about 26°N between 125°W and l40°W. East of l25°W, the front was not well defined; a mixture of the two water masses filled the nearshore area from Point Conception, California, to Punta Eugenia, Baja C alifornia.
