THE ISOLATED ILIAC ARTERY ANEURYSM * †

Common iliac artery aneurysm has received little attention in the surgical and radiologic literature (1, 2). The increasing age of the population and avail-ability of methods of treatment demand early recognition by the physician. The following case report is offered as an example of the diagnosis of this entity incidental to the patient’s initial chief complaint. CASE REPORT M. H., a 76-year-old Negro man, was admitted to the Los Angeles County General Hospital, Unit II, on May 12, 1964, with a complaint of dysuria, frequency, hesitancy and nocturia of 4 months ’ duration. The patient had had a perineal prostatectomy in January of the same year and had developed mem-branous urethral strictures after the operation. Incidental finding of a pulsating mass 3 cm to the right of the umbilicus was noted. On May 27, 1964, a percu-taneous translumbar aortogram was performed. A large saccular aneurysm of the right common iliac artery was demonstrated. The patient also had diffuse arteriosclerotic changes involving the distal abdominal aorta and iliac arteries
