The source for obstruction may be an extrinsic process compressing the SVC or an intraluminal process, such as a venous thrombosis. The diagnosis is most often confirmed with computed tomography or venography. Diagnostic criteria include the demonstration of obstruction as well as the opacification of collateral venous systems.
