Behavioral and physiological responses differ between primiparous and multiparous female rodents. Specific-ally, multiparous females respond with the full repertoire of maternal behaviors much more rapidly and with greater intensity than their primiparous counterparts. Since opiates inhibit the expression of maternal behavior in postpartum rats and can be reversed by means of the opiate antagonist naloxone, we investigated whether multiparous females would be resistant to the inhibitory effects of opiates on maternal hehavior, relative to primiparous females.
