Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by cys-togenesis; however, the cause of this cystogenesis is unknown. At ovulation, preovulatory collagenolytic activities in the ovar-ian follicles increase and various proteinases are needed to de-grade the tissues surrounding the follicles.
