Little attention has been paid to illness meanings held by those with HIV in the presence of highly active antiretro-viral therapy (HAART). This article illustrates how elucidating illness meanings might aid our understanding of HAART adherence and other important health behaviors. Using multiple qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, free lists, and drawings, I explore meanings surrounding the concept of AIDS among women with HIV in New Orleans, Louisiana. Illness meanings of AIDS reflect the women’s negotiation of physical, social, and emo-tional threats posed by HIV.
