HIV infection among the gay population has been well described in parts of the USA and the UK, namely San Francisco and London1,2.The somewhat smaller pockets of infection such as intravenous drug abusers have not been so well documented, although many of those involved in epidemiological research into HIV now recognise that infected drug abusers may represent the real risk of spread to the popu-lation at large who have no apparent risk factors for contracting Aids.
