The impact of the entrance of a WalMart into a metropolitan area, especially a relatively small one, has been controversial for many years. The controversy springs from the typical economic growth versus community culture argument con-cerning the “inevitable ” loss of many treasured small retail establishments.1 This article examines this issue within two different contexts. The first extends the existing statistical studies of this impact along the lines of Sobel and Dean (2008) but using county-level rather than state-level data.
