Intravenous therapies suchasheparinarenot orally bioavailable andhaveanarrow therapeutic index and high risk of bleeding. New oral antico-agulants currently under investigation may have more ideal characteristics for long-termadministration.Themechanism of thrombogenesis, limitations of current therapy, and new investigational oral anticoagulants are discussed.
