A mathematical model has been formulated to describe the electromagnetic field, fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification phenomena in electroslag refining systems. The formulation is based on the simultaneous state-ment of Maxwell's equations written for the MHD approximation, the equations for turbulent fluid flow in the slag as caused by both electromagnetic and natural convection forces (due to temperature gradients) and the differential thermal energy balance equations with allowances made for the spatial distribution of heat generation rate in the slag, for the moving interfaces, for the transport of heat by metal droplets falling through the slag and for the release of latent heat in the mushy zone.
