This report presents detailed state-by-state descriptions of the range of state policies affected by the current education'reform movement. It begins by presenting a typology of standards imposqd by education decision-makers at the state, district and local level. This typology was used to identify, collect, and describe state-prescribed educational standards in effect in the 1984-85 school year. Profiles of state standards were developed for each of the 50 states, covering student standards (testing, high school graduation requirements, and attendance), teacher standards (teacher preparation, certification and relicensing, and staff development), and school and school district standards (length of school year, length of school day, curriculum mandates, and other standards). Each state revised drafts of the profiles and provided information on curriculum mandates. Chapter 1 summarizes the policies in effect across the 50 states and changes made by the states; Chapter 2 includes the 50 revised profiles.
