Diabetes has steadily increased in prevalence, becoming one of the nation’s most challenging public health threats (1). Prevalence among adults is now more than 10%, and diabetes is the leading cause of nontraumatic lower-extremity amputation, end-stage kidney disease, and blindness; it more than doubles the risk of heart disease, stroke, and disability (1,2).
