This article describes a research project carried out with a group of ninth grade students at the Institución Educativa Distrital Britalia, in Bogotá. The starting point was a needs analysis which revealed the lack of practice regarding speaking skills. Three interactive tasks, a free conversational activity, and basic oral defenses were designed and implemented. Direct observation, videos and audiotapes provided evidence of the improvement of students ’ oral communication. The changes in the pedagogical practice, in the role of the teacher, in the syllabus design and in learners ’ attitudes towards their learning process were recorded as the main results of the action research project.
