DNA methylation, in particular, has been the focus of many recent studies aimed at understanding the function of epigenetic information in insects. An understanding of DNA methylation, however, requires knowledge of its context in relation to other epigenetic modifications. Here, we review recent insights into the localization of DNA methylation in insect genomes and further discuss the functional significance of these insights in the context of the greater eukaryotic epigenome.
